Obesity Solutions will host a booth at the 1st annual Fitness Fest in Civic Space Park on October 18th. The Fitness Fest is a pre-event expo for the YMCA’s 45th Annual Y Race, the oldest 5K/half marathon run in the valley. The Y Race will take place on Sunday, October 20th, starting at 7 a.m. There will be three different races: a half marathon, a 5k, and a 1-mile fun run. ASU Provost and Obesity Solutions Director Elizabeth D. Phillips will present medals at the end of the races. The theme of this year’s event is “Anyone Can”.
The Fitness Fest is a venue for participants to register for the Y Race as well as for local organizations to provide health and wellness information and demonstrations for the public. Obesity Solutions will showcase its key projects as well as sponsor a number of interactive displays during the Fitness Fest.
These will include:
(1) Children’s’ Art Project on Health and Obesity
We will ask children at the event to draw or paint a picture addressing one of the following questions:
- “What is health?”
- “How do you stay healthy?”
- “Draw a healthy meal?”
- “Draw an unhealthy meal.”
- “What does a healthy neighborhood look like?”
We will invite participants to sign their artwork and leave it with us to be included in our traveling Obesity Museum Exhibit that will take place starting in 2014.
(2) Health is…
We will ask adult event attendees to complete a sentence on an index card that we will use for an ongoing art project aimed at understanding how people perceive, understand, and live their own health stories. Sentence starters that participants can choose from will include:
- “Health is…”
- “My body is…”
- “Obesity is…”
- “Beauty is…”
- “My health goal is…”
- “Stigma is…”
We envision using these cards to start conversations with event attendees about their own health and about our organization.
(3) Altering your environment to support your health demo
Research shows that small alterations to your environment can have a positive impact on health. We will show visitors how to turn a normal desk into a stand desk, how to rearrange your pantry to encourage healthier eating, and other environment changes.
